STATEMENT

Kou Igarashi spent his early childhood in Paris, France. He is a photographer who aims to catch a passage of ‘’eternal time’’ over the too fast and busy contemporary society. He tries to do so not by a strong message, but by a simple image with blank spaces so that viewers can imagine freely. His main theme in his works is ”Why humans try to live with things they can never conquer even though they know it?”. The works in his solo exhibition ”a tempo” in 2009 were inspired by a news story about “two adolescents who lost their lives to a quiet, tranquil sea.” Taking as his subjects the artificial man-made structures created in a bid to control the forces of nature, such as breakwaters and snowsheds, Igarashi attempts to frame the relationship between human activity and the constancy of nature, unchanged since primitive times. His quest is still ongoing.
