STATEMENT

Yodogawa-Technique is an art unit founded by Hideaki Shibata and Kazuya Matsunaga. They are based out of the river terraces of Yodogawa in Osaka, creating objects using garbage and items drifted to the riverbank. Their startling performances involve making unbelievable models and sculptural pieces that bear almost no resemblance to their original form as garbage. They are also known for making works in different places while interacting with the locals, winning much attention and acclaim for this sort of community work project. They have lately worked on the reconstruction support project for Wakabayashi area in Sendai, Miyagi where devastating tsunami attacked, by using affected windbreak forests there. Other than that, they have joined various exhibitions overseas such as the Busan Biennale 2006, the “KITA!!” contemporary Japanese art exhibition held in Indonesia in 2008, “TWINISM” exchange exhibition between Osaka and Hamburg in 2009.
